How to catch cheaters on your Rust server

Use reports, player profiles, combat logs, fair play signals, Steam bans and alt checks to decide who to ban.

Updated Oct 28, 2026

No single number proves that a player cheats. GameSentry puts the signals in one place so your staff can review a player quickly and decide. Everything below works over RCON on every Rust server; the GameSentry plugin adds more detail where noted.

1. Notice who to look at

  • F7 reports from your players, with a snapshot of what was going on when each was filed.
  • The Player Reported by Several Players automation event, which fires when three different players report the same person within 30 minutes.
  • New VAC / Game Ban on Steam, Anti-Cheat Kick and Player Threat Level Changed events, which you can post to Discord.
  • Threat level in the player lists. Sort or filter by it to see the riskiest players first.

2. Open the player's profile

The Overview shows a Worth a look list: active bans, Steam bans, bans in other organizations, reports, VPN or shared addresses, family sharing and friends with VAC bans. Click the threat level to see which signals moved the score.

3. Check their fights

  • Combat shows kills, deaths and K/D, where their kills land and with which weapons.
  • Combat logs show every hit before a kill, with weapon, body part and distance.
  • Fair play shows combat signals from the last 30 days, such as the share of hits on the head at range and shots the server rejected, plus anti-cheat kicks.

With the GameSentry plugin on a premium license, included with Beta Tester access, Fair play also measures aim offset, snaps onto the head and recoil control, and lists the game's own anti-hack detections. These plugin signals are marked Not counted yet and do not change the score while they are being calibrated.

4. Look for ban evasion

  • Alts and teammates lists accounts that shared an IP address or network, and players who often team up.
  • VPN detection can keep VPN and proxy connections off a server.
  • The profile shows how many other organizations have an active ban on the player.

Shared networks, VPNs and family sharing can link people who are not the same person, and skilled players can have high headshot rates. Treat every item here as a signal to review, never as proof.

5. Decide and act

  1. 1

Record a Staff verdict on the Overview: Confirmed cheater or Not a cheater, with a note. It does not ban by itself.

  2. 2

Ban the player with the Cheating category, on one server or all of them.

  3. 3

Share the ban with partner organizations, or publish it on a community ban list.

The plugin signals need a premium plugin license, and VPN detection needs the feature in your organization's access. Everything GameSentry does for Rust servers is on one page: Rust admin tool and web RCON panel.
